SERVICES

Location recording of concerts in stereo with spot mics for soloists or special guests if necessary. I would attend afternoon run through/technical rehearsal if you have one, to allow me to set balance and levels.

Planned recording sessions to produce your own demos or CDs to sell.

I record in schools and have CIB Enhanced Disclosure. Concerts, demos for submission to ‘Music for Youth’ etc. Performances and course work for ‘A’ levels and ‘GCSE’ exams.

Choice of location is important; we must consider not only the acoustics of the concert or recording venue, but also the ambient noise of heating or adjacent rooms within and traffic outside the building.

Classical music cannot be ‘fixed in the mix’ and two important factors are microphone choice and placement. There are several microphone techniques commonly used to record ensembles, orchestras and choirs and this topic is widely covered on the internet. Microphone manufacturers AKG and DPA have some very useful articles.

My aim is to capture the natural sound and dynamics of the performance within the environment and so I would use the absolute minimum of signal processing when mixing and mastering. Sometimes however a dry recording can benefit from the addition of a small amount of artificial reverberation as can a close-miced soloist to help match it to the overall acoustics.

I am based in Leigh-on-Sea in South East Essex and can often recommend suitable locations in my area. Please discuss with me when selecting a venue for recording.

As I produce my own CD-Rs - with simple on-body print, cover and inlay - I can supply small quantities of CDs as required. This is ideal if for example you are a small choir and don’t need 500 CDs or you have produced a demo recording and wish to send a CD to a potential client with only selected tracks included. If you need large runs and professional artwork then I can help you to source that too.

Please note that it is the clients responsibility to obtain the necessary licence for production from the MCPS. See link.

Included in the location recording service is simple editing. This includes separating into individual tracks if required, fading applause, removing odd noises where possible etc.
